Composting your Garbage at Home

Howdy!

Sorry, it has been a while since I have posted anything.   Alot has been going on and the weather we are having and had over the past few days knock out my pepper seedlings (they were already weak) so I am still trying to get over it!   But what I wanted to post today was something I read in The National online that may be of interest to some of you who have a earth garden.   I am not sure how well this would work with containers unless you are always adding containers to your collection.   More after the jump.

It is the Bokashi composter.   You turn your kitchen waste into a fermented substance that you add to your garden soil and then it will breakdown into a compost.  Here is the link to the article.  If you want to know more about it they have a website here.    And here are a couple of other folks views on the system here and here.   The Compost Guy has alot to say about Bokashi.

Or if you would rather watch a video from a maker of Bokashi composters.

And here are a couple of videos of  helpful tips - here & here.

Thanks for stopping in and hopefully I will have some more postings soon.

Take Care!

Bubba

  2. Hi Bubba

I just stumbled upon your blog through google. Nice posts..i also grew vegetables on my terrace last year and had some really great produce, esp tomatoes, snow peas, aubergines and cucumbers. We blogged a bit about it but this year I am trying to do a 'bigger, better' blog...it'll be nice to know what you are up to in your gardening adventures!

  5. Hello, how are you doing? Its getting really hot now isnt it :)
I've been thinking for a long time about how to compost indoors and none of the options available seemed viable, until I (somehow) found bokashi! Its funny that I came to tell you that I ordered a bokashi bin today (and was going to explain what bokashi is) and found that you already have this blog about it and I somehow didnt see it -.- lol.

so, are you using bokashi? my bin arrives within a week or so, only then I can start messing with it :p

  6. Hi Garudamon11,

A "Gold Star" for researching it properly not like some people (me included) who just rush into something new without really looking into it properly first. My take on it is when all of your "rather large pots" have a load of compost added to it - what do you do with the next compost when it is ready - you have to buy another "rather large pot" again? If you have limited space that may not be an option. But, if you have a proper soil garden or lots of space this could be a good system.

It might just be me, when I tried the You Tube link you gave it said the video clip was not available. Did you perhaps make a mistake when writing it down or maybe it has been taken down?

How many buckets are you doing - just the one? Did you get it here from the people in Dubai?

    Thanks for keep us updated?

  7. What I was actually thinking of is putting a limit to wasting food, creating my own fertilizer, and not having to buy potting soil anymore.
What I mean is, Im going to put the old and used soil that has lost its nutritional value in a large pot and add the fermented bokashi to it, when it finishes decomposing completely I would have a new load of old soil, so I take out the now fresh and nutritious soil and add it to the pots that had their old soil removed, and this old soil would be used to decompose another load of bokashi and become nutritious again, and so on.

The link works fine for me, try writing "Burying Your Bokashi Waste in A Plastic Bin" in youtube and watch the matching video :>

I tried to get my bokashi from BokashiDubai but I miscalculated the costs (a bit over 400 dirhams) and told my mom to fill the credit card with just 400 dirhams, the card kept getting rejected and I didnt know why until I realised that I dont have enough money so I just took the lazy route and ordered from Amazon.com (its actually cheaper, even with shipping costs :p). But I'll most likely get the bokashi mix bag from BokashiDubai when the current one is consumed since it should be cheaper and faster to arrive than Amazon.

I just got one bucket, dont think I need more (and I dont have space), btw I think you have more space than I do since all Im using is a small balcony and my room's windowsill, I wouldnt have had so many plants if it wasnt for my mom's intelligent decision to put racks, which greatly maximised space.

  8. Hi Garudamon11,

Thanks for the update & info. I found the video you are talking about and it was interesting. The idea of mixing with your old soil is a good idea for the summer as my potting soil lays dormant for the summer and I would thought that the heat would have helped with the breakdown of the waste quicker. Hummm, something to think about.

    Thanks for the feed back.
